Chapter 10 - MY MISTAKE WITH DENISI called Denis Vale.

Against Detective Keene’s advice.

My mistake.

His number came from an old family contact list Julian found.

I was angry.

I wanted the missing piece.

Denis answered with a rough voice.

“Hello?”

“Is this Denis Vale?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Nora Whitmore.”

Silence.

Then:

“Julian’s wife.”

“You know me?”

“I know who you are.”

My pulse climbed.

“Your prescription was found in my house.”

Another silence.

“What?”

“Your medication.”

“What medication?”

“The sedative.”

His voice changed.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You have a receipt.”

“I have receipts for medication, yes.”

“Did you give Eleanor your prescription?”

“No.”

“Did she ask?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

Then I heard myself.

Interrogating a stranger.

Accusing him before police had established anything.

Denis said:

“You sound exactly like them.”

“Like who?”

“People who decide what I did before asking.”

He hung up.

Detective Keene was furious.

“You may have alerted a potential witness or suspect.”

“I know.”

“You may also have damaged cooperation.”

“I know.”

“Do not investigate your own case.”

“I know.”

She stared.

“Do you?”

May you like

I hated her again.

Mostly because she was right.
