Chapter 20 - ELEANOR’S COUNTERATTACKOnce the evidence hardened, Eleanor changed strategy.

She stopped claiming the powder was digestive.
She admitted using the medication.
Then argued I had benefited.
Her attorney was more careful than she was.
In a recorded family-court-related evaluation concerning her contact with Chloe, Eleanor said:
“Nora slept. She stopped snapping at everyone.”
I almost broke the laptop.
Julian did.
He slammed it shut.
“That’s enough.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“My mother drugged you because she wanted you easier to live with.”
“Yes.”
He stood.
For months, Julian had been translating Eleanor.
Not that day.
“She could have killed you in a car.”
“Possibly.”
“She could have hurt Chloe.”
“Yes.”
He sat again.
Then started crying.
“I told her tea was fine.”
I moved toward him.
Stopped.
Not because I did not love him.
Because he had to survive that sentence himself for a minute.
Eventually I said:
“You did not authorize medication.”
“I made her feel like she had authority.”
“That part we can talk about.”
May you like
Precision.
Again.
