Chapter 11 - DENIS WAS MISSING MEDICATIONDenis came in voluntarily two days later.

With a lawyer.
He lived in a small apartment.
Worked part-time repairing commercial kitchen equipment.
Seven years sober from alcohol.
No drug-related conviction in more than a decade.
He had legitimate prescriptions for anxiety and panic disorder.
The medication found in my tea was one.
He told investigators his most recent refill had gone wrong.
He picked it up.
Took the bottle home.
Two days later he noticed the count seemed low.
He assumed he had miscounted.
Then another detail.
Eleanor had visited him the same afternoon.
Why?
Money.
She sometimes paid his utility bill when work was slow.
He hated admitting that.
Did she touch the medication?
“I don’t know.”
Was the bottle visible?
“Yes.”
Did he give her any pills?
“No.”
Could she have taken some?
His face tightened.
“I suppose.”
Not proof.
Then Detective Keene showed him the pharmacy receipt.
Denis stared.
“That isn’t mine.”
“What do you mean?”
“The prescription is mine. I didn’t keep that receipt.”
“Do you remember taking it?”
“I threw the pharmacy bag away.”
“Where?”
“At my apartment.”
That meant Eleanor could have obtained the receipt during her visit.

Or someone else.
The case opened wider.
