Chapter 14 - THE TEXT I FOUNDJulian searched his old messages.

Not because police told him to.
Because shame had finally become curiosity.
He found a thread with Eleanor from five weeks earlier.
ELEANOR:
Nora looks exhausted.
JULIAN:
She is.
ELEANOR:
She needs to slow down.
JULIAN:
Good luck telling her.
ELEANOR:
I can get her to rest.
JULIAN:
Mom, don’t start.
ELEANOR:
I mean tea.
JULIAN:
Fine. Tea is not a personality transplant.
Nothing criminal.
Then four days later:
ELEANOR:
She slept until noon.
JULIAN:
She needed it.
ELEANOR:
Exactly.
Julian stared at the screen.
“I thought she was tired.”
I believed him.
Mostly.
Then:
“Did you notice I only slept like that after mornings she made tea?”
He did not answer.
That hurt.
Not guilt.
Failure.
May you like
Different.
Still hurt.
