Chapter 17 - BROOKE’S RECEIPTThe pharmacy had surveillance footage.

Not of Eleanor picking up Denis’s prescription.

Denis had picked it up himself.

The receipt in our house remained unexplained.

Then investigators reviewed pharmacy account activity.

Two weeks after Denis’s refill, someone had requested a transaction-history reprint at the pharmacy counter.

Customer identified herself as family.

She knew Denis’s date of birth and address.

The employee should not have provided it without stronger verification.

The pharmacy later acknowledged that.

Security video showed the customer.

Brooke.

Julian’s sister.

I stared at the still image.

“No.”

Detective Keene said nothing.

Brooke wore the same black coat she had worn in my kitchen.

Same short blond hair.

Same handbag.

She had obtained the receipt.

Not Eleanor.

And she had lied to me by omission while sitting at my table talking about their mother’s history.

When police contacted her attorney, Brooke stopped cooperating voluntarily.

That was when the word accomplice stopped feeling theoretical.
