Through her lawyer, she sent a letter.
I read it.
She wrote:
Nora has suffered from extreme stress for years. I believed small amounts of medication would help her rest. I never intended harm.
I stopped.
There it was.
Not full admission.
Enough.
She continued:
I understood the medication because Denis has taken it safely for years. I made a terrible judgment.
Then:
There were people in the family who knew I was concerned and agreed Nora needed help.
People.
Plural.
I read that sentence three times.
Julian read it too.
His face changed.
“Who?”
I looked at him.
“You tell me.”
“I don’t know.”

For once, I believed his confusion.
Which meant someone else had been involved.
