Chapter 16 - THE THING I GOT WRONGI made my own mistake.
During the initial examination, I described one dark area on Tommy’s calf as “possible burn-type injury” in a verbal conversation.
I was wrong.
The pediatric wound specialist later determined it was pressure-related skin injury, likely caused by the key and hard material beneath the homemade cast.
I corrected my note.
Richard’s attorney still used my first wording during deposition.
“You initially thought the father burned the child.”
“No.”
“Your words were ‘burn-type injury.’”
“Yes.”
“And that was wrong.”
“Yes.”
“Yet you immediately believed abuse.”
“No.”
“You called security.”
“I called security because the father attempted to remove a child during an incomplete medical evaluation after we discovered an unsafe homemade cast.”
He paused.
I continued only when asked.
