Chapter 8 - THE PHONE IN THE BLUE BOXPolice obtained a warrant for Richard’s garage.

They found a blue metal toolbox beneath a workbench.

Old padlock.

Rust around the keyway.

The key fit.

Inside:

Laura’s phone.

Her car keys.

Her passport.

A small notebook.

Two medical after-visit summaries.

And a broken pair of glasses.

Nothing in the box automatically proved abuse.

The phone mattered most.

It was locked.

Police did not guess passwords.

Laura later provided access and authenticated the device.

Inside were photographs she had taken over several months.

Bruises on her arm.

A cracked bedroom door.

A broken lamp.

Texts from Richard.

Some ugly.

Some ordinary.

One:

Come home alone. We can talk.

Another:

If you bring cops into this again, don’t expect Tommy to forgive you.

Another:

You walked out. Remember that when people ask who abandoned who.

Manipulative.

May you like

Not a confession.

Still evidence.
