Chapter 6 - HOW THE KEY GOT INTO THE CASTTommy explained the cast in fragments.
The original hospital cast had been blue fiberglass.
He liked it.
His teacher signed it.
A classmate drew a dinosaur.
Then one night, after an argument at home, the cast cracked near the ankle.
Richard removed it.
“How?” the interviewer asked.
“With Dad’s tool.”
“What tool?”
“The loud one.”
Possibly an oscillating multitool.
Terrifying.
Then:
“Dad said we weren’t going back to the doctor.”
“Why?”
“He said doctors ask too much.”
There.
Tommy had previously found the rusty key on Richard’s workbench.
He knew the blue toolbox was where Richard locked his mother’s phone.
While Richard mixed plaster in the kitchen, Tommy wrapped the key and his note in a piece of sandwich bag.
He pushed both against the loose padding around his leg.
Why?
“Dad checks pockets.”
The homemade plaster went over them.
Tommy thought he had hidden the secret safely.

Instead, he spent days with metal pressed against bruised skin.
That explained one of the worst pressure marks.
