Chapter 26 - THE LAST X-RAYEight months after Tommy first came to our clinic, Dr. Grant showed him his final X-ray.

“See that?”

Tommy squinted.

“What?”

“That line used to be your fracture.”

“Where?”

“Exactly.”

He smiled.

His tibia had healed.

Growth plate looked good.

No significant deformity.

The heel wound had closed months earlier.

He could run.

Jump.

Climb.

Laura still winced every time he did.

Normal mother after abnormal year.

Tommy asked:

“Do I need another cast?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“Hopefully not.”

He looked at me.

“Can I keep the boot?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because insurance companies and inventory departments enjoy destroying childhood dreams.”

Laura laughed.

Tommy didn’t understand.

Good.

We found him a clean strip of unused casting material instead.

Everyone at the clinic signed it.

Elena drew a dinosaur.

Tommy said hers looked like a dog.

She was offended for twenty minutes.
