Chapter 4 - THE NOTEPolice arrived.
Officer Daniel Rourke and Detective Hannah Lewis.
Child protection was notified.
The key and wrapped note remained where they had fallen until the appropriate photographs were taken.
Then Detective Lewis collected them with gloves.
Richard’s attorney had not yet arrived.
Richard shouted from another room:
“That belongs to me.”
Detective Lewis asked:
“What?”
Silence.
“The key?” she asked.
Richard said:
“I don’t know.”
Interesting.
The note was not opened in front of him.
It was documented first.
Photographed.
Bagged.
Then opened later under controlled conditions.
I did not see it happen.
I heard about its contents because I became a witness.
The handwriting was large.
Uneven.
Childlike.
Blue crayon.
Five words on the first side:
MOM PHONE IN BLUE BOX
On the back:
DAD SAID DONT TELL
No accusation of murder.
No hidden bank account.
May you like
No map.
Just a child pointing adults toward something he believed mattered.
