PART 1
“She faked a fever to skip school… then recorded her stepfather planting stolen pills in her sister’s backpack.”
Sophia Bennett faked a fever because she did not want to take a math quiz.
That was the lie that saved her sister.
At 7:12 a.m., she pressed the thermometer against a mug of hot tea until it read 101.8.
At 7:19, she coughed twice in front of her mother.
At 7:22, Ellen kissed Sophia’s forehead, sighed, and told her to stay in bed.
Valeria rolled her eyes from the doorway.
“You’re so dramatic.”
Sophia stuck out her tongue.
That was the last normal thing anyone said that morning.
By 8:05, Ellen had left for work.
By 8:17, Valeria had gone to school with her blue backpack slung over one shoulder.
By 10:35, Sophia was under her bed, holding her phone with both hands, trying not to breathe.
Her stepfather Ralph had come home early.
He thought the apartment was empty.
He wore black clothes and blue medical gloves.
Sophia had heard the front door open, then the soft click of the lock, then Ralph’s voice from the hallway.
He was on the phone.
“No.”
“I’ll handle it today.”
“She thinks she’s untouchable.”
Sophia had slipped off the bed and crawled underneath before he reached the room.
Then Ralph entered carrying Valeria’s blue backpack.
Her sister must have forgotten it by the door and returned to school with only her laptop bag.
Ralph knelt on the wooden floor.
He pulled a small unlabeled pill bottle from his jacket pocket.
Sophia’s stomach turned cold.
Ralph smiled down at the backpack.
“Today, the perfect girl is going down.”
Sophia lifted her phone.
Her hands shook so badly the screen blurred.
But she kept recording.
Ralph forced the pill bottle deep into the side pocket.
Then he zipped it closed and whispered, “Let the principal find that.”
Sophia covered her mouth.
Her sister was seventeen.
Straight-A student.
Captain of the debate team.
The daughter everyone praised.
The girl Ralph hated because Valeria saw through him.
Sophia quietly sent the video to her mother.
Mom… he put something in Valeria’s backpack.
The message delivered.
Then her phone made the tiniest sound.
Ralph froze.
His head turned slowly toward the bed.
“Sophia?”
Her blood stopped.
Ralph walked closer.
“Open this door, Sophia.”
Her phone buzzed.
Ellen’s voice came through on speaker, shaking but fierce.
“Don’t open it.”
“The police are coming.”
Ralph dropped to his knees and stared into the dark under the bed.
His face twisted.
“You stupid girl…”
May you like
“What did you ruin?”
