PART 8

The letter had Ralph’s fingerprints on it.

That was almost funny in a terrible way.

After all the gloves, all the planning, all the lies, he had shoved a threat under the door with his bare hand.

Detective Hale called it arrogance.

Valeria called it stupidity.

Sophia called it “villain homework failure.”

Even Ellen laughed for half a second.

Then she cried.

The violation sent Ralph back into custody with stricter conditions.

His attorney argued he only wanted to apologize.

The judge read the sentence aloud.

You think the video is enough?

Then denied him release.

That was the first hearing Sophia attended.

She wore a gray hoodie and sat between Ellen and Valeria.

Ralph did not look as big from across the courtroom.

That surprised her.

At home, under the bed, he had filled the whole world.

Here, he was just a man in a wrinkled shirt being told not to contact children.

The prosecutor requested Sophia’s video be admitted as evidence.

Sophia stared at the table.

It felt strange.

Her fear had become a file.

Her shaking hands had become proof.

Valeria squeezed her knee.

“Breathe.”

Sophia breathed.

The trial preparation lasted months.

Martin Kline, the supplier, took a deal.

He named Ralph as the person who moved stolen medication out of apartment buildings and used family access to avoid suspicion.

Ralph planned to frame Valeria because she had photographed the inventory sheet.

He planned to implicate Ellen because her badge number gave the story credibility.

He planned to ruin Valeria before her college interview.

That detail made Ellen stand up from the conference table and leave the room before she screamed.

Valeria followed her into the hallway.

Ellen whispered, “He knew how hard you worked.”

Valeria nodded.

“That’s why he picked it.”

Ellen cried.

Valeria hugged her.

Not as a child forgiving everything.

As a daughter deciding that blame had already spent enough time in the wrong place.

When the prosecutor asked if Sophia could testify, Ellen hesitated.

Sophia did not.

“I can.”

Valeria turned to her.

“You don’t have to.”

Sophia lifted her chin.

“He put it in your bag.”

“I saw him.”

May you like

“I’m saying it.”
