part 4

PART 4
Valeria was called to the principal’s office at 11:08 a.m.
She arrived expecting a scholarship question.
Instead, she found two school administrators, a police officer, and her mother’s missed calls lighting up her phone.
For one terrifying second, she thought Sophia had been hurt.
Then the principal said, “Valeria, do you know anything about medication found near your belongings?”
Valeria went cold.
She did not cry.
That came later.
She looked at the officer and said, “Was it in my blue backpack?”
The officer paused.
“How did you know that?”
Valeria closed her eyes.
Because Ralph had asked where that backpack was last night.
Because he had told Ellen that perfect girls always had secrets.
Because Sophia was home sick.
Because this was not random.
“My stepfather,” Valeria said.
The principal frowned.
“Valeria, this is serious.”
Valeria opened her phone.
She had a folder named Scholarship Essays.
Inside it was not only essays.
There were screenshots.
Photos.
A copy of the missing pharmacy inventory sheet.
A recording of Ralph threatening to “teach her a lesson.”
She slid the phone across the desk.
“It is serious.”
“That is why I kept proof.”
At the apartment, Detective Nora Hale arrived by noon.
She watched Sophia’s video once.
Then again.
Then she asked for the original file transfer record.
Sophia did not know what that meant.
Valeria did when she arrived with Ellen twenty minutes later.
Her face was pale.
Her jaw was tight.
She hugged Sophia so hard Sophia squeaked.
“You recorded?”
Sophia nodded.
“I was scared.”
Valeria pressed her forehead to Sophia’s.
“You did perfect.”
Ralph sat at the kitchen table between two officers, no longer smiling.
Detective Hale placed the pill bottle on the table in an evidence bag.
No label.
No patient name.
No lawful possession.
Then she placed Ralph’s blue gloves in another bag.
Then Valeria’s screenshots.
Then Sophia’s video transcript.
Ralph looked at Ellen.
“She is turning you against me.”
Ellen stared at him.
For years, exhaustion had made her want peace more than truth.
Now truth sat in plastic bags on her kitchen table.
“No,” Ellen said.
“She saved us from you.”
Ralph leaned back.
His face changed again.
Not apologetic.
Not afraid.
Cruel.
“You have no idea who those pills belonged to.”
Detective Hale looked up.
“Then tell us.”
Ralph shut his mouth.
