part 6

PART 6
Ralph was arrested in the hallway while Mrs. Alvarez from 4B watched through her cracked door.
He tried one last performance.
He cried.
He begged Ellen.
He said Sophia misunderstood.
He said Valeria had always hated him.
He said a man under pressure sometimes made mistakes.
Valeria looked at him and said, “Planting stolen pills in a child’s backpack is not pressure.”
Sophia stood behind her mother, clutching the phone like it was armor.
Ralph’s eyes shifted to her.
“You ruined your family.”
Sophia’s chin trembled.
Ellen stepped in front of her.
“No.”
“You did.”
Detective Hale took Ralph away.
The apartment door closed.
For the first time in years, the apartment was quiet without feeling unsafe.
Then Ellen sank to the floor.
“I brought him here,” she whispered.
Valeria knelt beside her.
“Mom.”
“I let him near you.”
Sophia began crying too.
Ellen reached for both daughters.
“I’m sorry.”
“I am so sorry.”
For a while, nobody said anything else.
Some apologies are not solutions.
But they can be doors.
The next days were full of interviews.
Police.
School officials.
Pharmacy investigators.
A child advocate for Sophia.
A victim advocate for Valeria.
Ellen cooperated with everything.
The pharmacy audit showed she had reported discrepancies twice, but Ralph had intercepted one email from her home laptop before it sent.
He had also used her badge number after memorizing it from her work bag.
That could have destroyed her.
Instead, Sophia’s video saved her job.
Valeria’s evidence saved her scholarship hearing.
Detective Hale said it saved much more than that.
The stolen medication had been moving through three neighborhoods.
Ralph was not the leader.
But he was a useful link.
And when useful men get caught, they often become talkative.
Ralph did.
By the end of the week, two more arrests were made.
The contact named M was identified as Martin Kline, a former pharmacy supplier with access to shipment schedules.
Sophia heard that and said, “So my fake fever helped catch a whole crime thing?”
Valeria smiled for the first time.
“Yes.”
“But you are still taking the math quiz.”
Sophia groaned.

For one second, they sounded like sisters again.
