part 2

PART 2
Ralph had never liked Valeria.
Not openly at first.
Men like Ralph were careful around mothers in the beginning.
He bought Ellen flowers.
He fixed the leaking kitchen sink.
He helped Sophia with science projects and called Valeria “the smart one” when relatives visited.
But Valeria noticed things.
She noticed Ralph carried cash but claimed he was broke.
She noticed he received calls from blocked numbers after midnight.
She noticed he always knew when Ellen’s paycheck cleared.
She noticed the medicine cabinet at the pharmacy where Ellen worked had a missing audit log after Ralph visited her one evening.
Valeria noticed too much.
That was why Ralph hated her.
Sophia used to think her older sister was just suspicious.
Valeria was always suspicious.
She checked receipts.
Saved screenshots.
Asked too many questions at dinner.
When Ralph said he had been at work all afternoon, Valeria asked which job.
When he said he had paid the electric bill, Valeria asked why the notice was still on the fridge.
When he told Ellen that Valeria needed discipline, Valeria calmly asked why adults who lied always demanded respect first.
Ellen would say, “Val, please.”
Not because Valeria was wrong.
Because Ellen was tired.
The apartment in Brooklyn had thin walls, old pipes, and too many worries.
Ellen worked double shifts.
Ralph had been unemployed for three months but called it “between contracts.”
Valeria filled out scholarship applications at the kitchen table every night.
Sophia pretended not to understand the tension.
Then, two weeks before the fake fever, Valeria found something.
A pharmacy inventory sheet in the trash.
Not a copy.
An original.
There were missing controlled medications listed in red.
Valeria took a picture before Ralph came into the kitchen.
He saw her phone.
His face changed.
“What are you doing?”
Valeria smiled.
“Homework.”
That night, Sophia heard shouting behind her mother’s bedroom door.
Ralph said Valeria was turning the house against him.
Ellen said Valeria was a child.
Ralph said children could still ruin families.
The next morning, Valeria told Sophia, “If anything weird happens, record first.”
Sophia laughed.
“Like a spy?”
Valeria did not laugh back.
“Like someone people will believe.”
Now, under the bed, Sophia finally understood.
Valeria had known Ralph was planning something.
May you like
She just did not know she would be the target.
