part 9

PART 9
Sophia testified on a Thursday morning.
She hated the courtroom smell.
Old paper.
Coffee.
Too much air-conditioning.
She sat in the witness chair with her feet not quite touching the floor and tried not to look at Ralph.
The prosecutor asked simple questions first.
Her name.
Her age.
Her school.
Why she stayed home that day.
Sophia looked at the judge and said, “I faked a fever.”
Someone in the back coughed like they were hiding a laugh.
The prosecutor almost smiled.
“And what happened after your mother and sister left?”
Sophia told them.
The door.
The footsteps.
Ralph’s gloves.
The blue backpack.
The pill bottle.
His words.
Today, the perfect girl is going down.
The video played after that.
Sophia looked down at her hands while the courtroom watched what her phone had seen from under the bed.
Ralph’s gloved fingers.
The bottle.
The backpack.
His voice.
His plan.
When the defense attorney stood, Valeria stiffened.
He tried to make Sophia sound confused.
“You were under a bed.”
“Yes.”
“It was dark.”
“Yes.”
“You were scared.”
“Yes.”
“So maybe you misunderstood.”
Sophia finally looked at Ralph.
Then at the attorney.
“I was scared.”
“That is why I recorded.”
The courtroom went silent.
The attorney changed subjects.
Valeria testified next.
She explained the inventory sheet.
The screenshots.
Ralph’s threats.
Ellen testified last.
Her voice broke when she described realizing Ralph had used her workplace, her badge number, and her daughters as pieces in his lie.
Ralph did not testify.
The jury did not need him to.
They convicted him on charges connected to theft, evidence planting, witness intimidation, and attempted framing.
Martin Kline’s plea helped secure the larger stolen-medication case.
Valeria’s scholarship interview was rescheduled.
Sophia passed the math quiz with a B-minus and acted like it was a national emergency.
Ellen took both daughters for pancakes afterward.
Valeria raised her orange juice.
“To fake fevers.”
Ellen gave her a look.
Sophia raised her glass.
“To recording first.”

That one, Ellen allowed.
