part 3

PART 3
Sophia did not open the bedroom door.
She stayed under the bed with dust in her nose and terror pressing on her ribs.
Ralph crouched low, one gloved hand gripping the edge of the mattress.
His eyes searched the darkness.
“Sophia.”
His voice softened.
That scared her more than shouting.
“Come out.”
“We can fix this.”
Her phone stayed against her chest.
Ellen was still on the line.
Sophia heard traffic behind her mother.
Fast breathing.
Then Ellen’s voice again.
“Sophia, listen to me.”
“Do not come out.”
“Stay where you are.”
Ralph’s face hardened.
“She is lying to you.”
“She doesn’t know what she saw.”
Sophia whispered, “I recorded you.”
The room went silent.
Ralph’s hand tightened on the mattress.
“You what?”
Sophia’s voice shook.
“I sent it to Mom.”
For one second, Ralph looked less like a stepfather than a stranger wearing the wrong face.
Then he stood.
Hard.
The bed frame shifted.
Sophia flinched.
He crossed the room and grabbed the backpack.
Ellen shouted through the phone.
“Sophia, where is he?”
Sophia whispered, “He has Valeria’s bag.”
Ralph heard her and turned back.
“You little idiot.”
Then sirens began outside.
Faint at first.
Then closer.
Ralph looked toward the window.
The blue gloves were still on his hands.
The backpack was in his grip.
The pill bottle was still inside.
He had seconds to choose a lie.
He chose the oldest one.
Blame the child.
When the officers knocked, Ralph ran to the living room and opened the door with fake panic.
“She’s sick.”
“She’s confused.”
“My stepdaughter has anxiety.”
Sophia crawled out from under the bed with the phone still recording.
Two officers stood in the doorway.
Behind them, Ellen came running down the hallway, coat half buttoned, face white with fear.
“Sophia!”
Sophia ran to her mother and collapsed against her.
Ralph held up the backpack.
“I found this in Valeria’s room.”
“She’s been hiding things.”
The younger officer looked at his blue gloves.
Then at the phone in Sophia’s hand.
Then at the backpack.
“Sir.”
“Put the bag down.”
Ralph smiled.
It was the wrong smile.
Too polished.
May you like
Too late.
