part 5

PART 5
The pills came from Mercy Park Pharmacy.
Ellen’s pharmacy.
That was the part that made her sit down.
Detective Hale confirmed it through batch numbers and inventory records.
The bottle label had been removed, but the lot code on the tablets matched medication missing from the secured cabinet Ellen managed during weekday shifts.
Ralph had not only tried to frame Valeria.
He had tried to make the theft point back to Ellen too.
A stolen bottle in Valeria’s backpack.
A mother who worked at the pharmacy.
A teenage girl under pressure.
A family desperate for money.
It would have been neat.
Ugly.
Believable.
Ralph had built a story with all three of them inside it.
Valeria understood first.
“He wanted Mom blamed too.”
Ellen looked like she might be sick.
Detective Hale nodded.
“If the school found the bottle first, yes.”
“The chain would have led to your workplace.”
Sophia sat on the couch wrapped in a blanket.
She whispered, “But why?”
Valeria looked at Ralph.
He stared at the floor.
Detective Hale answered carefully.
“Because someone has been stealing medication.”
“And someone needed another suspect.”
Ellen covered her mouth.
“I would have lost my license.”
Valeria said, “I would have lost my scholarship.”
Sophia added in a tiny voice, “And everyone would think we were bad.”
Detective Hale looked at Ralph.
“That was the plan?”
Ralph said nothing.
The apartment felt smaller.
Every wall seemed to remember something Ellen had explained away.
The missing cash.
The late-night calls.
The locked drawer.
The sudden interest in Ellen’s work schedule.
Detective Hale obtained a warrant for Ralph’s phone.
By evening, the first messages came back.
One contact saved as M.
Need another bottle before Friday.
Use the girl if audit gets close.
Make it look like school pills.
Ellen read the screenshot and began crying.
Valeria did not.
Her anger had gone quiet.
Sophia crawled into her lap even though she was thirteen and usually too old for that.
Valeria wrapped both arms around her.
Ralph finally spoke.
“You think this ends with me?”
Detective Hale looked at him.
“No.”
May you like
“I think this starts with you.”
