PART 7

School was worse than Sophia expected.

Not because people blamed her.

Because everyone knew.

By Monday, half the eighth grade had heard a version of the story.

Sophia under the bed.

Ralph with gloves.

Pills in the backpack.

Police in the apartment.

Some kids called her brave.

Some called her a snitch.

One boy asked if her family was on drugs.

Valeria heard about that before lunch.

She found him near the vending machines and said, “Say it again.”

He did not.

Valeria was famous now too.

Not the way she wanted.

Teachers looked at her with pity.

Students whispered.

The principal called her resilient.

Valeria hated that word.

Resilient sounded like adults were congratulating you for surviving things they failed to prevent.

Ellen met with the school that afternoon.

She did not ask them to keep things quiet.

It was too late for quiet.

She asked them to protect her daughters from retaliation and gossip disguised as curiosity.

Detective Hale sent a letter confirming Valeria and Sophia were witnesses, not suspects.

That helped.

But home helped more.

They changed the locks.

Deleted Ralph’s access codes.

Threw out his clothes.

Boxed anything connected to him and gave it to police when requested.

Sophia refused to sleep in her room for three nights.

Valeria slept on the floor beside the couch so Sophia would not feel childish.

On the fourth night, Sophia whispered, “What if I hadn’t faked sick?”

Valeria stared at the ceiling.

“Then I might be in trouble.”

“Mom might be in trouble.”

“And Ralph might still be here.”

Sophia swallowed.

“So lying was good?”

Valeria turned her head.

“No.”

“Recording was good.”

Sophia thought about that.

Then nodded.

Ellen stood in the hallway listening, one hand over her mouth.

She had spent years teaching her daughters to tell the truth.

Now they were teaching her that truth sometimes survives because a scared child knows when to press record.

The court issued a protective order the next morning.

Ralph was barred from contacting all three of them.

He violated it in less than six hours.

A letter arrived under the apartment door.

One sentence.

You think the video is enough?

Valeria picked it up with tongs.

Sophia asked, “Why tongs?”

Valeria answered, “Because I watch crime shows.”

Ellen called Detective Hale.
