Chapter 1

Her Dead Husband Was Raising Another Family.

Claire Mercer stopped in the doorway of the private recovery suite and forgot how to breathe.

Cool blue nursery shadows stretched across the room.

A crib stood near the wall beneath a delicate hanging baby mobile.

Warm bedside light glowed over cream bedding, a hospital bed, and a brunette woman in a blue recovery gown.

Sophie.

Claire did not know her name yet, but she knew what she was looking at.

A woman recovering after birth.

A newborn wrapped in white.

And Daniel Mercer, the husband Claire had buried five years earlier, standing alive in a dark charcoal sweater with panic burning across his face.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Daniel stepped between Claire and the bed, one hand raised to block her, the other reaching subtly toward the door.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Claire stared at him.

Same eyes.

Same voice.

More gray at his temples.

The man whose coffin she had kissed before it went into the ground.

The man whose death had hollowed out five years of her life.

Her shock hardened slowly into something colder.

“I buried an empty coffin for you.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Behind him, Evelyn Mercer clutched the newborn closer to her pearl-covered chest. Daniel’s mother looked older, but not surprised enough.

That hurt almost more.

Evelyn had known.

Evelyn stepped beside Daniel, blocking Claire’s view of Sophie and the crib.

“Leave before you make this worse.”

Claire’s hand slipped into her coat pocket.

Her phone stayed hidden.

Recording.

Daniel glanced toward Sophie, then turned back with cruel finality.

“She’s my wife. And that baby is our son.”

Sophie’s eyes widened.

Evelyn’s confidence returned for half a second.

Claire looked from the newborn to Daniel.

Then directly at Evelyn.

A restrained smile appeared through the heartbreak.

“Then you’d better hope I came alone.”

Footsteps echoed faintly from the hallway outside.

Daniel turned toward the door in fear.

Evelyn tightened her arms around the baby.

Claire did not look away.
