Chapter 10

Claire’s backup was not revealed.
No police entered the recovery suite.
No financial scheme was exposed.
No arrests occurred.
No final legal outcome was shown.
The confrontation remained suspended inside the exclusive private recovery center outside Boston, beneath cool nursery shadows and warm bedside light.
Claire Mercer stood near the doorway in her cream blazer, black shoulder bag against her side, hidden phone still recording from her coat pocket.
Her face was no longer stunned.
The heartbreak remained, but it had become something sharper.
Controlled.
Observant.
Dangerous.
Daniel Mercer stood between the bed and the door, no longer certain which direction to defend.
His gray-streaked hair, familiar face, and living breath were all proof of the impossible thing Claire had been forced to accept.
Her dead husband was alive.
And raising another family.
Sophie sat weakly in the hospital bed, newborn son held against her chest, eyes fixed on Daniel with growing horror.
Evelyn stood near the crib, pearls perfect, face pale, every calculation interrupted by the fact that two women now stood on opposite sides of the same lie.
The baby mobile turned slowly above the crib.
The room was quiet except for soft newborn sounds and the faint hum of medical equipment.
Then the footsteps outside stopped directly beyond the door.
Daniel turned.
Fear crossed his face before he could hide it.
Evelyn’s arms tightened around herself now that the baby was no longer hers to shield.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Five years ago, you made sure I stood beside an empty coffin.”
Daniel whispered, “Claire…”
She cut him off.
“No. Not this time.”
A shadow moved beneath the door.
Someone raised a hand outside.
The knock had not come yet.
Claire’s smile returned, restrained and knowing.
“Now you get to wonder who I let hear you.”
Daniel stared at the door.
Sophie stared at Daniel.
May you like
Evelyn stared at Claire.
And the story ended one breath before the person in the hallway entered.
