Chapter 5

Evelyn moved first.

That told Claire the older woman was more dangerous than Daniel in some ways.

Daniel reacted to fear.

Evelyn managed it.

She stepped away from the crib, still holding the newborn, and angled her body between Sophie and Claire.

“You just gave birth,” Evelyn said to Sophie. “You do not need this stress.”

Sophie’s eyes stayed on Daniel.

“Was there a funeral?”

Daniel rubbed one hand over his jaw.

“Things were complicated.”

Claire almost closed her eyes.

Five years reduced to that.

A coffin.

A grave.

Insurance forms she did not want to remember signing.

A house gone quiet.

Birthdays spent alone.

The way she kept Daniel’s voicemail saved until the carrier finally deleted it.

Complicated.

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“No. Complicated is a delayed flight. Complicated is a tax dispute. Your wife burying you while your mother watches is not complicated.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“You are speaking in front of a newborn.”

Claire looked at the baby.

Her anger shifted around him, never toward him.

“Yes,” she said. “So I’ll be precise.”

Daniel took another step toward her.

Claire lifted her chin.

“Touch me and you’ll explain that too.”

He stopped.

Sophie watched this exchange with growing alarm.

That mattered.

She had seen Daniel command.

Now she saw him obey restraint when witnesses changed the room.

Claire looked at Sophie.

“I won’t ask you questions you’re too weak to answer tonight. But you deserve to know that I married Daniel Mercer eleven years ago. I was told he died five years ago. I buried a coffin with his name on it.”

Sophie’s face went white.

Daniel snapped, “You don’t know what happened.”

Claire turned back to him.

“Then start with why you’re alive.”

He said nothing.

The silence grew.

The newborn shifted in Evelyn’s arms.

A monitor somewhere in the suite hummed softly.

The hallway footsteps stopped just outside the door.

Daniel’s eyes flicked toward the sound.

Claire did not turn.

Not yet.

She needed Daniel watching the door.

She needed Evelyn tightening her grip on the baby.

She needed Sophie seeing exactly who feared the truth arriving.

Claire’s phone remained recording in her coat pocket.

Her voice lowered.

“You always did hate witnesses.”
