Chapter 4

Claire had not found Daniel by accident.
But she would not give him that satisfaction.
Not in that room.
Not with Evelyn calculating angles and Sophie trembling in the hospital bed.
For five years, Claire had lived inside a death certificate that answered everything and explained nothing.
The night Daniel “died,” she was not allowed to identify him.
Evelyn told her it would be cruel.
The officials told her the condition made viewing impossible.
Daniel’s business partner told her closure sometimes required trust.
Claire trusted all of them because grief is exhausting, and exhausted people accept doors being closed for them.
But grief thins over time.
Questions remain.
A bank envelope forwarded to an old address.
A medical invoice with initials that should have meant nothing.
A photograph in the background of an online charity post, blurry but familiar enough to stop her heart.
A man’s hand on a glass balcony railing.
Daniel’s watch.
Not proof.
Never proof.
Just enough to make Claire start preserving instead of mourning.
That was how she ended up outside the exclusive recovery center outside Boston on a cold night with her shoulder bag heavy and her phone ready.
Still, nothing prepared her for the sight of him alive.
Nothing prepared her for Evelyn holding a newborn like she had earned the right to another generation.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Who told you I was here?”
Claire did not answer.
He stepped closer.
Her body remembered him before her mind could stop it.
The way he used proximity.
The way he made rooms smaller.
The way he turned questions into trespassing.
But this time, Claire did not step back.
“You’re standing in a maternity suite with your mother, a newborn, and a woman who doesn’t know what to call you,” she said. “And you’re asking how I got here?”
Evelyn’s voice cut through the room.
“Enough.”
Claire turned toward her.
“No, Evelyn. Enough was the funeral. Enough was the empty grave. Enough was five years of sending flowers to a man who was alive.”
Sophie made a small sound.
Daniel looked sharply toward her.
“Don’t listen to this.”
Sophie whispered, “Was there a funeral?”
Daniel did not answer quickly enough.
Claire saw Sophie understand the pause.
Not the whole truth.
Not yet.
May you like
But enough to know a lie had entered her recovery room before Claire did.
