Chapter 7

“Evelyn,” Sophie said again, voice weak but clearer, “give me my son.”

Evelyn adjusted the blanket.

“You need rest.”

“He’s my baby.”

The room went colder.

Claire watched Daniel.

He should have stepped in immediately.

Should have taken the baby gently from his mother and brought him to Sophie.

He did not.

His hesitation told Sophie something she clearly had not known before tonight.

Evelyn had authority in this family that did not come from love.

Claire knew that feeling.

Evelyn had once controlled grief that way.

Controlled documents.

Funeral arrangements.

Financial meetings.

Which rooms Claire entered.

Which people called her.

Which boxes of Daniel’s belongings were “too painful” to open.

Now she controlled the newborn.

Claire moved one step sideways, not toward Evelyn, just enough to widen Sophie’s view.

Daniel moved to block her again.

Claire’s eyes flashed.

“You are very busy standing between women and the truth tonight.”

Sophie looked at him.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Claire is trying to destroy us.”

Sophie whispered, “Who is us?”

The question wounded him because it had no safe answer.

Him and Sophie?

Him and Evelyn?

Him and the baby?

Him and the life built over Claire’s grave?

Claire heard the hallway footsteps again, softer now.

Waiting.

Daniel did too.

His voice dropped.

“Claire, whatever you think you brought with you, it won’t fix what happened.”

She smiled faintly.

“No. It won’t.”

That unsettled him.

Because she was not there to repair the past.

He had mistaken her arrival for a plea.

It was not.

Evelyn took one step toward the crib with the baby.

Claire immediately lifted her hand.

“Stop.”

Evelyn glared.

“You don’t give orders here.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“He always loved women saying that right before the room changed.”

Daniel’s breath caught.

The phrase meant something to him.

Good.

Claire had chosen it deliberately.

Sophie noticed.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel snapped, “Nothing.”

Claire said, “Then you won’t mind me repeating it when the door opens.”

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time, his panic became visible enough for Sophie to fear not Claire, but him.

The baby made a tiny sound.

Evelyn finally looked down.

And in that second, Sophie reached for the call button beside her bed.
