Chapter 3

Sophie looked from Daniel to Claire with the helpless confusion of a woman waking into someone else’s nightmare.
She was weak from birth, one hand gripping the edge of the blanket, the other reaching instinctively toward the crib.
The newborn gave a small, soft movement in Evelyn’s arms.
Evelyn shifted him higher, careful and possessive.
Claire’s eyes followed the motion.
The baby was innocent.
That clarity mattered.
No matter what Daniel had done, no matter what Evelyn had hidden, no matter what Sophie knew or did not know, the child had not chosen the lie he was born inside.
Claire forced herself to keep her voice low.
“Sophie, how long have you been married to him?”
Daniel snapped, “Do not speak to her.”
Sophie’s lips parted.
“Married?”
The word landed strangely.
Claire’s gaze sharpened.
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
For the first time, Daniel seemed to lose track of which lie belonged to which woman.
He had said wife.
Sophie had heard something else.
Claire took one small step forward.
Daniel blocked her immediately.
“Back up.”
Claire stopped.
Not because he commanded her.
Because every movement mattered now.
“Does she know your legal name?” Claire asked.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“My name is Daniel Mercer.”
Claire laughed once, softly.
The sound carried no humor.
“It wasn’t five years ago.”
Sophie’s breathing changed.
“Daniel?”
He turned halfway toward her.
“She’s unstable.”
Claire’s expression did not move.
There it was.
The bridge between old life and new.
When Daniel wanted control, he did not deny facts first.
He questioned the woman holding them.
Evelyn adjusted the baby’s blanket.
“Claire has suffered terribly,” she said. “Grief can distort memory.”
Claire looked at the older woman.
“You gave the eulogy.”
Evelyn’s mouth closed.
“You stood beside my husband’s coffin and told me he would want me to move on.”
The room went still.
Sophie stared at Daniel now.
Not Claire.
Daniel.
That shift mattered.
Daniel saw it and panicked.
“She showed up here to cause trouble. She must have followed someone.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around the phone in her pocket.
Not yet.
She would not reveal how she found him.
Not before Daniel said more.
Not before Evelyn did.
The hallway footsteps came closer.
Daniel heard them too.
His face changed.
Fear, not anger.

Claire’s quiet smile returned.
