Chapter 9

Daniel sat on the edge of the chair near the crib without being invited.
It was an old habit.
Occupy space.
Make himself look reasonable.
Lower the temperature so the next lie sounded like a compromise.
“Sophie,” he said carefully, “there are things about my past I could not explain.”
Claire watched him with almost clinical focus.
His voice had softened.
Not because he was sorry.
Because Sophie was the audience most at risk of leaving his control.
Sophie held the newborn against her chest.
Her face was pale, but her eyes had cleared.
“Could not explain,” she repeated.
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire said, “He means chose not to.”
Daniel glared at her.
Sophie did not.
That mattered.
She was listening differently now.
Evelyn stood near the foot of the bed, pearls glowing in the low light, face tight with contained fury.
“You have poisoned this room,” she told Claire.
Claire looked at her.
“No. I entered it.”
Evelyn’s nostrils flared.
“After five years, you appear at a recovery center, terrifying a new mother and a newborn—”
Sophie cut in weakly.
“She didn’t terrify me.”
Evelyn stopped.
Sophie looked at Daniel.
“You did.”
Daniel’s face cracked.
“Sophie.”
“You let me have a baby with you without telling me another woman buried you.”
Claire looked away for half a second.
That sentence hit harder than she expected.
Another woman.
That was all she had become in Sophie’s eyes at first.
Now Sophie understood the order of harm.
Daniel leaned forward.
“I was protecting you.”
Sophie tightened her arms around the baby.
“From Claire?”
He hesitated.
Claire’s phone continued recording inside her pocket.
The footsteps outside shifted again.
A soft murmur came from the hall, then silence.
Daniel’s fear returned.
“What did you bring here?”
Claire’s expression cooled.
“Not what. Who.”
Evelyn’s hand gripped the bedrail.
Daniel stood.
“No.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“You don’t know who yet.”
That frightened him most.
Because Daniel had spent five years knowing exactly which names to avoid, which records to bury, which people to keep apart.
Now Claire had brought uncertainty to his door.
The baby stirred.
Sophie kissed his cap gently.
Then she looked at Daniel with tears in her eyes.
“Tell me who she is to you.”
Daniel looked at Claire.

For once, he had no version ready.
