Chapter 8

The nurse’s call light blinked near the bed.
No alarm sounded.
No sudden rescue arrived.
But the small glow changed the balance.
Sophie’s breathing shook.
“I want my baby checked,” she said.
Evelyn’s expression tightened.
“He’s fine.”
Sophie’s voice strengthened by one fragile inch.
“I want a nurse.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Claire saw him calculate whether stopping the call would look worse than allowing it.
He chose stillness.
Evelyn did not.
She moved toward the bassinet area, still holding the newborn.
Sophie’s eyes filled with panic.
Claire stepped into Evelyn’s path.
Not touching her.
Not reaching for the baby.
Just standing there.
Evelyn stared at her with hatred.
“You have no claim to this child.”
Claire’s face remained calm.
“I know.”
That answer disarmed the room.
Daniel expected jealousy.
Evelyn expected accusation.
Sophie expected perhaps some demand she could not emotionally handle.
Claire gave none.
She looked at the newborn with measured gentleness.
“He needs his mother calm. And his grandmother needs to stop using him as a shield.”
Evelyn’s lips parted.
Daniel hissed, “Claire.”
She ignored him.
Sophie whispered, “Please.”
That single word did what argument could not.
It moved the baby out of strategy and back into care.
Evelyn slowly crossed to the bed and placed the newborn into Sophie’s waiting arms.
Sophie winced but held him carefully.
Claire stepped back.
The baby settled against his mother.
Daniel watched with an expression Claire could not read.
Grief?
Fear?
Annoyance?
Perhaps all three.
The hallway remained quiet.
Too quiet.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Who is outside?”
Claire tilted her head.
“Someone you didn’t expect.”
His mouth tightened.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“No,” Claire said. “Because it used to work.”
Sophie looked down at the baby, then up at Daniel.
“Were you legally dead?”
The question struck the room harder than shouting.
Daniel did not answer.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Claire held still.
No police entered.
No documents appeared.
No full scheme exposed.
