Chapter 2

Claire had worn black for a year after Daniel died.
Not because anyone told her to.
Because color felt dishonest.
The funeral had been closed-casket. The explanation was damage, fire, official grief spoken in careful phrases that left no room for questions. Evelyn stood beside Claire the entire service, one gloved hand gripping her elbow so tightly that Claire remembered the bruise longer than the prayers.
“My son loved you,” Evelyn whispered over the coffin.
Claire had believed her.
That was the part that made the room in front of her feel unreal now.
Five years ago, she had accepted flowers from Daniel’s colleagues, condolence letters from people who barely knew him, and charity invitations from families who wanted tragedy near their table but not too close.
She had packed away his shirts.
Canceled his phone line.
Signed forms she could barely read because grief made every page blur.
Evelyn helped with everything.
That had seemed like mercy then.
Now Claire saw it differently.
Help can be kindness.
Help can also be control.
Inside the recovery suite, Daniel stared at her like a man watching the past enter through a locked door.
Claire noticed small things because shock had sharpened her instead of breaking her.
His left hand was bare.
No old wedding ring.
No scar visible from the accident that supposedly killed him.
His posture had changed, but his habit had not: whenever cornered, Daniel reached for exits.
Evelyn, however, reached for the baby.
Not the door.
Not Sophie.
The baby.
That told Claire where the family’s newest secret rested.
Sophie tried to push herself higher in the hospital bed, face pale beneath the cool light.
“Daniel?” she whispered. “What is she talking about?”
Daniel did not turn.
“Stay out of this.”
Claire saw Sophie flinch.
There it was.
That old tone.
The one Claire remembered from the last year of her marriage, when Daniel stopped explaining and started instructing.
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“Claire, you are confused.”
Claire looked at her.
“No. I was confused at the funeral.”
Evelyn’s expression flickered.
Only once.
Enough.
The footsteps in the hallway slowed, then continued.
Daniel’s eyes darted toward the door again.
Claire kept her hidden phone steady in her pocket.
She had come here with one question.

Now she had too many.
