He said:
“I should have stopped Dad.”
“Yes.”
“I should have told you about the nursery.”
“Yes.”
“I thought Claire would fall apart if I challenged it.”
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“You’re not going to make this easier?”
“No.”
Then:
“I understand why you were scared for her.”
His eyes filled.
“Thank you.”
“That does not excuse you.”
“I know.”
Good.
We sat.
Eventually he said:
“I grew up thinking you didn’t need anyone.”
I looked at him.
“Because Mom and Dad told you that.”
“Yes.”
“I needed people.”
“I know now.”

That sentence did not repair childhood.
It opened a door.
