Chapter 26 - THE RED BUTTONTwo years after the hospital, Mae found a toy with a red button.

She pressed it.
Noise exploded.
All three triplets laughed.
I froze.
Daniel noticed.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
The hospital emergency button.
Memory arrived.
Richard moving toward the bed.
Eli crying.
Rachel standing between us.
My finger pressing red plastic.
For years I thought bravery was confrontation.
Sometimes it is infrastructure.
A button.
A locked door.
A nurse who follows policy.
A lawyer who reads the page you were too tired to read.
I pressed the toy button again.
The children screamed happily.
Daniel covered his ears.
“I hate this thing.”
“I love it.”
He looked at me.
Then understood.
“Okay.”
I smiled.
May you like
“Stop saying okay.”
He laughed.
