Chapter 4 - HOSPITAL SOCIAL WORKHer name was Morgan Lee.

She sat beside my bed after the babies were taken briefly for neonatal checks.

“Hannah, Rachel told me your father attempted to remove one infant from the bassinet.”

“Yes.”

“And said you should give one child to your brother.”

“Yes.”

“Has your family previously discussed adoption or guardianship?”

“No.”

“Any documents?”

“No.”

“Any reason they might believe you agreed?”

“No.”

Then I stopped.

“What?”

“I signed some papers.”

“When?”

“Before delivery.”

“What kind?”

Hospital forms.

Insurance.

Consent to treat the babies.

Emergency-contact documents.

A packet Linda brought from our family attorney.

Morgan’s pen stopped.

“What packet?”

“I thought it was estate planning.”

“When?”

Two weeks earlier.

I had been thirty-two weeks pregnant.

Swollen ankles.

Blood pressure creeping upward.

My parents came over.

Richard said:

“With triplets and Daniel abroad, we need emergency planning.”

Reasonable.

I signed:

Temporary medical authorization if Daniel and I were both incapacitated.

Designation of Mason as second backup guardian after my sister Grace.

Or had Grace been first?

My stomach tightened.

“I need copies.”

Morgan nodded.

“Do you know the attorney?”

“Yes.”

“Call your own attorney before discussing this further with family.”

“I don’t have one.”

“You might want one.”

Not dramatic.

May you like

Just sensible.

I hated needing sensible people.
