Chapter 7 - DANIEL ON THE PHONEDaniel called from Frankfurt.

Not a heroic entrance.
A terrible video connection.
Airport noise.
His face white from panic.
“I’m trying to get a flight.”
“Don’t promise a time.”
“I know.”
We had already learned that lesson.
He looked toward the babies.
I turned the phone.
Mae asleep.
Eli stretching.
Jonah under phototherapy monitoring for mild jaundice.
Daniel started crying.
Quiet.
Then:
“Which one did Richard take?”
“Eli.”
His jaw tightened.
“Did he hurt him?”
“No.”
“You?”
“He hit me.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
I expected rage.
Instead:
“What do you need me to do?”
That question saved him from saying several stupid things.
“Call our attorney.”
“We don’t have one.”
“Find one.”
“Okay.”
“Do not call my father.”
“Okay.”
“Do not threaten anyone.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“You don’t.”
“I know now.”
May you like
He smiled sadly.
Fair.
