Chapter 6 - MASON CALLSMason called the morning after the hospital assault.
I nearly ignored him.
Then answered with Morgan in the room.
“Hannah.”
“What?”
“I’m sorry.”
“For?”
“Dad.”
“Only Dad?”
Silence.
Good.
“What did you know?”
“We knew there was a backup plan.”
“What backup plan?”
“If something happened.”
“What did you think would happen?”
“You had a high-risk pregnancy.”
“So?”
“Dad said you wanted us to take one baby temporarily if the delivery went badly.”
I looked at Eli.
“He named Baby B?”
Another silence.
“Mason.”
“Yes.”
There.
“How long did you know?”
“Two months.”
My chest hurt.
Claire’s pale green nursery.
Not hope.
Preparation.
“Did you think I knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you ever mention it?”
Mason began crying.
“Because Claire couldn’t talk about it without getting emotional.”
“No.”
“What?”

“You didn’t mention it because some part of you knew I would say no.”
He did not answer.
