Chapter 24 - MY MOTHER HOLDS MAELinda did not see the babies for eight months.

My choice.

Then therapy.

Mediation.

Boundaries.

Eventually I allowed one supervised visit.

She entered slowly.

No handbag.

That made me smile despite myself.

Mae crawled toward her before the boys did.

Linda looked at me.

“May I?”

Good.

“Sit down.”

She did.

I lifted Mae.

Placed her in Linda’s arms.

Mom started crying.

Mae pulled her necklace.

Of course.

Linda whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

I said:

“Not to her.”

She looked confused.

“Mae was never the one you planned to take.”

That landed.

Mom looked toward Eli.

Then at me.

May you like

“I’m sorry to all three of them.”

Better.
