For the first time, David appeared frightened.

The fabricated Daniel birth record remained inside the trust database. It identified Emily as the mother of a living first child.
If Daniel was legally her first child, the new birth might not activate the intended clause correctly.
David had created a false son fifteen years earlier not merely as a test.

Laura understood.
“We need to invalidate Daniel’s birth record.”
Daniel stood beside her.
“What happens to me if you do?”
The room became silent.
A legal identity built through fraud was still the only life he knew. Erasing the record could threaten his citizenship documents, school history, medical coverage, and inheritance rights.
Emily refused to solve one injustice by making the boy legally disappear.
“Separate him from my maternity record without erasing him.”
The trustees said that process required court approval.

Michael was permitted to see the baby through glass after Emily agreed.
He placed one hand against the window.
“She’s beautiful.”
Emily watched from her recovery bed.
“She is not a reason for us to pretend nothing happened.”
“I know.”
“You poisoned my drink.”
“I know.”
“You helped build a room where I would wake without her.”
“I know.”
He did not ask for forgiveness.
That was the first thing he had done that did not demand something from Emily.
