It authorized Michael to approve surgery, psychiatric medication, transfer to another facility, and restricted contact with anyone he considered “emotionally disruptive.”
The second page granted him authority over decisions involving the baby.
The third page was worse.
If Emily became “uncooperative, irrational, or unable to demonstrate maternal stability,” the newborn would be released directly to Michael.
David would become secondary guardian.
Emily stared at the words.
“Uncooperative means refusing them.”
Hannah nodded grimly.
“The language is broad enough to make almost any disagreement look like incapacity.”
Michael struggled against security.
“She reviewed those terms with an attorney.”
“Which attorney?” Emily demanded.
He did not answer.
The attachment contained a video.
Emily appeared on-screen inside her home library. She looked into the camera and said she trusted Michael to make every medical decision if pregnancy affected her judgment.
Her voice sounded exact.
Her expressions looked natural.
Emily watched herself surrender rights she had never discussed.
“That isn’t real.”
David laughed from several feet away.
“It is your face and voice.”
“It’s still not real.”
Hannah paused the video.
The woman on-screen wore Emily’s wedding ring on her right hand.
Emily wore it on her left.
The library clock showed 7:42 in the evening, but bright daylight filled windows that faced east.
The video had been constructed from separate recordings.
Michael had collected hours of Emily speaking during prenatal appointments, charity interviews, and family videos. Someone had combined the images into a synthetic authorization.
The hospital clerk opened the metadata.
The file had been created on Michael’s personal laptop.
His name appeared under the software license.
Security tightened its grip on him.
Michael’s arrogance finally broke.
“I didn’t make the video.”
“But you owned the computer,” Hannah said.
“My father’s staff uses my devices.”
David turned toward his son.
“Watch your mouth.”
The loading process continued.
An encrypted appendix appeared beneath the video.
Emily authorized its release.
A scanned order filled the screen.
In the event of premature labor, patient is to be transported to Westbridge Maternal Recovery Center after stabilization.
Hannah searched the hospital database.
The center was not licensed for emergency obstetrics.
Its address led to a private building owned by David’s investment company.
The document instructed staff to separate Emily from her child for a minimum of seventy-two hours.
It described the separation as necessary to evaluate “postpartum attachment instability.”
Emily remembered Michael insisting she deliver at Westbridge despite her objections.
She had believed he wanted privacy.
He had wanted isolation.
The final paragraph froze her attention.
During the evaluation period, all corporate voting rights, trust authority, and ownership decisions shall be exercised by Michael West as temporary family representative.
The attachment connected medical incapacity to business control.
Emily’s next contraction struck harder.
Her monitor began alarming.
Dr. Lena Reyes rushed from the treatment area and examined her while staff prepared to move the stretcher.
“You may be in active premature labor.”
David stepped forward.
“She needs to be moved to Westbridge.”
Dr. Reyes looked at him with open disgust.
“She is not leaving this hospital.”
Michael shouted from security’s grip.
“You don’t understand what happens when that baby is born!”
Emily looked at him.
“What happens?”
He stared at the floor.
