Chapter 5 - The Agreement Michael Signed at Twenty-OneArchive C contained a recruitment contract.
Michael had signed it at twenty-one.
The agreement promised him executive placement, education funding, and eventual authority inside Westbridge if he maintained “personal proximity” to Caroline Vale’s sole heir.
Emily was nineteen when Michael first approached her at the fundraiser.
He already knew her schedule, college program, favorite books, and recent breakup.
Nothing about their meeting had been accidental.
Michael was escorted into Emily’s room under guard after she requested one supervised conversation.
He stopped several feet from the bed.
“You knew who I was before we met,” she said.
“Yes.”
“You were paid to date me.”
“At first.”
“And then?”
“I loved you.”
Emily looked toward the forged authorization on Hannah’s tablet.
“You forged my medical rights.”
Michael’s face crumpled.
“I was trying to protect my position.”
“From your pregnant wife?”
“From my father.”
“Your position mattered more than my body.”
“I didn’t know he would induce labor.”
“You unlocked my phone.”
“Yes.”
“You uploaded the directive.”
“Yes.”
“You allowed him to build a private room where I would be separated from our baby.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
He claimed David promised the separation would last only long enough to complete a psychiatric evaluation. No harm would come to Emily or the child.
“And you believed him?”
“I believed I could control what happened after the shares transferred.”
“You still thought the company belonged to you.”
“I thought we were a family.”
“A family does not require a forged signature.”
Michael had signed the recruitment agreement before meeting her, but he insisted his feelings later became real.
The distinction no longer comforted Emily.
Love that continued benefiting from deception was not enough.
Natalie questioned him about the contraction medication.
Michael admitted placing the powder in Emily’s drink.
David told him it was a mild herbal compound used to begin labor safely.
“Why would you want labor to begin at thirty-four weeks?” Emily asked.
“Because the board vote is tomorrow.”
“What board vote?”
David planned to merge Westbridge with a private investment group. Once Emily’s shares transferred, she could block it.
If the baby arrived tonight while Emily was declared incapacitated, Michael would vote in her place tomorrow.
The merger price was far below the company’s value.
Hidden payments would move to David-controlled accounts.
Michael claimed he intended to stop his father after gaining temporary control.
“You committed every step David needed,” Emily said, “while imagining you would become brave at the end.”
He had no response.
Hannah opened the final page of Michael’s old recruitment agreement.
A handwritten amendment had been added three years later.
Marriage authorization approved following identity confirmation.
Emily frowned.
“What identity?”
Michael stepped closer before security stopped him.
“I’ve never seen that page.”
The amendment contained a fingerprint.
Not Michael’s current fingerprint.
The hospital biometric system compared it automatically.
It belonged to another man with the same date of birth and the same Social Security number.
