Caroline eventually helped Laura escape, but kept her existence hidden to protect both women from the company board.
Emily looked at the aunt she had never known.
“Why come now?”
“Because David reactivated my medical identity.”
Laura Vale’s name appeared on the private aircraft manifest as a secondary guardian.
David intended to use her identity to transport a child while presenting footage of Caroline’s face as proof of family approval.
“Which child?” Natalie asked.
“Daniel.”
The fifteen-year-old prototype heir held something Emily’s newborn did not.
His false maternity record linked him directly to Caroline’s original trust system.
If David moved Daniel beyond Tennessee before the record was challenged, he could obtain a foreign guardianship order recognizing the boy as Emily’s legal son.
Daniel’s supposed rights could then be used to contest Emily’s control.
David never needed to remove the newborn physically if he could use the older child to freeze the trust.
The aircraft-transfer band printed after delivery was a diversion.
Hospital security had focused on the nursery.
Daniel’s protected room stood in another wing with fewer officers.
Laura rushed there with Natalie.
The room was empty.
A nurse lay sedated but breathing beside the bed.
Laura Bennett’s temporary badge had been copied.
Security footage showed Matthew entering Daniel’s corridor.
Matthew remained under supervision downstairs.
The person on-camera wore his face and scar but moved differently.
The current Michael watched the clip.
“That’s Father’s recovery specialist.”
David maintained professional impersonators for both sons, just as he used Caroline and Laura’s resemblance.
Daniel had been removed by someone wearing Matthew’s identity.
The service elevator descended toward the ambulance entrance.
Emily remembered arriving there hours earlier while David dragged her from the stretcher.
The entire scheme had circled back to the same doors.
Security reached the bay as a black medical van accelerated away.
Police followed.
Inside the hospital, David’s provisional authority vanished after the trustees confirmed the declaration.
He remained under guard.
Yet he smiled when told Daniel had been taken.
“You think I need to control the hospital?” he asked Natalie.
“The boy is evidence against you.”
“The boy is the only person who knows which Michael married Emily.”
Emily stared through the recovery-room screen.
“What does that mean?”
David looked toward both sons.
“The man beside your bed believes he entered your life after Matthew refused.”
“That is what happened.”
“No. They changed places again after the wedding.”
Michael’s face went white.
David claimed the brothers had been periodically exchanged through medication, false travel, and manipulated records. Emily may have lived with both men without knowing.
One husband fathered her child.
The other forged her rights.
The current genetic result proved only which man’s sample had been tested—not which identity he had lived under.
Emily looked at Michael.
“Did you ever switch knowingly?”
“No.”
His fear appeared real.
That did not make his answer reliable.
The black van carrying Daniel was found abandoned near the river.
Inside lay the empty transport carrier, Matthew’s copied badge, and a phone playing a live video.
Daniel sat inside an unknown office.
Behind him stood a woman with Caroline’s face.
Laura Vale was still inside the hospital.
The woman in the video could only be Caroline.
Or another impersonator.
Daniel looked toward the camera.
“Emily, your mother left an attachment for you. David made me memorize the password.”
“What is it?”
He opened his mouth.
Someone behind the camera placed a hand on his shoulder.
The video ended before he spoke.
Then Emily’s patient portal refreshed.
