The investigation uncovered an adoption file connected to a residential school David funded. Two boys had lived there under alternating versions of the same identity.
One appeared publicly with David.
The other completed tasks David did not want linked to his family.
Emily looked at her husband.
“Did you know?”
“Not until I was seventeen.”
Michael remembered being sent away for several months whenever David said he needed “specialized schooling.” When Michael returned, teachers and relatives sometimes referred to conversations he had never had.
He believed David was gaslighting him.
Later, he found photographs of another boy wearing his clothes.
David told him the boy was an impersonator used during threats against the family.
“Where is he now?” Natalie asked.

“When?”

The recruitment agreement proved the other Michael had been assigned to Emily first.

Emily remembered a brief encounter at a charity event months before their official meeting. A young man introduced himself as Michael, spoke warmly, then disappeared before she could ask for his number.
When she met her future husband later, he claimed they had never spoken.

Security searched the private facility.
It contained a prepared maternity suite, locked medication cabinets, cameras, and a nursery with no registered patients.
In an upstairs office, investigators found a recent photograph.
A man identical to Michael stood beside David.
He was alive.
He wore a hospital administrator’s badge under the name Matthew Stone.
The building’s internal schedule showed Matthew assigned to receive Emily after the ambulance transfer.
Michael stared at the image.
“My father told me he was dead.”
David looked toward the floor.
Natalie confronted him.
“Which son did you intend to make Emily’s decision-maker?”
David smiled without warmth.
“Whichever one understood loyalty.”
The current Michael’s face changed.
He had believed the forged authorization would place him in control.
David could replace him with the other man at any time.
The identity arrangement ensured no son could safely rebel. One could always be discredited as the impostor.
Emily’s contractions intensified.
Dr. Reyes warned that delivery could occur within hours despite attempts to slow it.
As staff prepared the operating suite, Hannah received a call from hospital administration.
