Reyes remembered no hospitalization.
Her mother told her she spent that summer recovering from a car accident.
Hospital images showed a teenage Lena inside Westbridge Maternal Recovery Center.
David appeared in the background.
Caroline stood beside him.
Laura studied the footage.
“Caroline did visit the facility that summer.”
“Why?” Emily asked.
“She was investigating the first proxy cases.”
The authorization may have been planted to make Reyes appear mentally unstable if she ever exposed the network.
Caroline’s signature could have been copied from investigative documents.
The file included a video of teenage Lena.
She said:
“My memory is unreliable. Mr. West helps my family make safe decisions.”
Reyes watched herself repeat the sentence.
“I don’t remember this.”
Laura recognized the room.
Teenagers connected to Westbridge executives were sent there for “leadership resilience treatment.” Medication and repetition were used to control testimony when families faced scandal.
Reyes’s father had worked for David.
At seventeen, Lena discovered patient-consent records being altered. Her father brought her to the private center to prevent her from reporting it.
Caroline found her and removed her after three weeks.
“She saved me,” Reyes whispered.
“She may also have decided not to tell you the full truth,” Laura said.
Another adult had chosen secrecy as protection.
Reyes opened her archived treatment notes.
The final page contained Caroline’s handwriting:
Lena remembers the second Michael. David cannot know.
Dr. Reyes looked toward Matthew and Michael.
She had met one of them as a teenager.
A memory returned.
A young man locked inside an adjoining treatment room. A scar at his temple. He passed her notes beneath the door.
Matthew.
He had been confined at Westbridge while David trained the other son to assume his identity.
Lena and Matthew planned to escape together.
Caroline removed Lena first and promised to return for him.
She never did.
Matthew watched the recovered video.
“You were the girl in the next room.”
“You told me your father wanted to replace you.”
“He did.”
The connection explained why David specifically feared Reyes treating Emily.
She could confirm the duplicate-son system began decades earlier.
Matthew had returned with a court order not only to claim Emily.
He expected Reyes to recognize him and expose David.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Emily asked.
“I didn’t remember until now.”
Matthew’s motive remained mixed.
He wanted truth.
He also signed papers granting himself control over Emily.
The hospital’s secure nursery alarm sounded.
A staff member using Dr. Reyes’s credentials attempted to open the infant-transfer corridor.
Reyes stood beside Emily.
Her badge was still clipped to her coat.
Security reached the corridor and found a woman dressed as a physician carrying an empty neonatal transport carrier.
She removed her mask.
Caroline Vale’s face appeared beneath it.
Emily’s mother had been dead for seven years.
The woman looked older than Caroline did at death, but the resemblance was exact.
She raised both hands.
“My name is Laura Vale,” she said. “Caroline was my sister.”
Emily stared.
Her mother had never mentioned a sister.
