He looked almost exactly like Michael, though a thin scar crossed his right temple. His voice carried the same rhythm but less hesitation.
He presented a passport, driver’s license, marriage certificate, and hospital insurance card.
Every document identified him as Michael David West.
Emily’s husband held the same records.
The court order declared that one man had committed identity fraud and ordered hospital staff to recognize the individual whose biometrics matched the original recruitment file.
That was Matthew.
If enforced, he would become Emily’s legal spouse for medical purposes.
Natalie examined the order.
Judge Franklin Avery had signed it forty minutes earlier without speaking to Emily.
Avery’s election campaign had received substantial donations from David’s foundation.
Dr. Reyes refused to allow either man into the treatment area.
“Emily has already revoked spousal decision-making. Their identity dispute changes nothing.”
Matthew looked through the glass at Emily.
“You may not remember me.”
“I remember the gala.”
His expression shifted.
“You spoke to me first.”
“You disappeared.”
“David removed me.”
Matthew said he was the son initially chosen to marry Emily. He refused after learning David intended to use the marriage to control Caroline’s trust.
David placed him inside private psychiatric facilities and sent the other Michael instead.
“Why return now?” Emily asked through the speaker.
“Because your husband called me.”
The current Michael denied it.
Matthew produced messages sent from Michael’s encrypted account.
The labor plan is active. Come take the identity after the transfer.
The messages appeared authentic.
Michael looked horrified.
David had access to both men’s accounts.
He could make each believe the other was betraying him.
Matthew claimed he came to expose the plan.
Yet the court order he carried granted him Emily’s medical authority.
“You could have brought evidence without asking to become my husband,” Emily said.
Matthew stared at the papers.
“David’s attorney prepared them.”
“And you signed.”
“Yes.”
Another man had accepted control as the price of rescue.
The hospital rejected the order pending review.
Matthew surrendered a storage drive taken from David’s office.
It contained the merger agreement, private-clinic plans, and correspondence about Emily’s labor.
One message referred to the unborn child as the continuity infant.
Another instructed the private facility to replace the hospital wristband after delivery.
Emily’s fear sharpened.
“Why replace the wristband?”
Neither Michael knew.
David refused to answer.
The facility’s nursery inventory provided a clue.
Two wristbands had been printed.
One bore Emily’s surname.
The other bore the surname West-Stone.
The second was connected to an infant medical file created six months earlier.
No child had yet been born under that file.
Matthew’s scarred face lost color.
“Stone was my protected name.”
The false infant record listed him as father.
The mother field identified Emily.
David intended to create two legal versions of the same baby.
One child could appear to belong to Michael West.
The same child could later appear to belong to Matthew Stone.
Whichever son obeyed David would control the identity recognized by the company trust.
Hannah checked the fetal record attached to the second file.
It contained genetic results.
Emily had never approved prenatal paternity testing.
The report named neither Michael nor Matthew as the likely biological father.
