Chapter 10 - The Chamber Under the FireplaceClaire kept the rifle aimed at Theodore.

Mara kept the flare pistol aimed at Claire.

No one fired.

The lower chamber’s heartbeat monitor pulsed steadily across the wall.

Theodore looked at it with genuine shock.

“That room was sealed twenty years ago.”

“After you put my father inside,” Claire said.

“Russell died during the Northstar raid.”

“You never showed me a body.”

Claire had been eight when Russell Vane disappeared. Her mother told her Theodore betrayed him during a federal investigation and stole Northstar’s emergency network.

Years later, a Northstar loyalist contacted Claire and gave her proof that Russell might have survived.

She built her entire adult life around reaching Blackridge.

She became Mara’s assistant.

She copied credentials.

She encouraged Evan’s resentment.

She helped form the affair.

But she claimed Mara’s murder was Evan’s idea.

“You drugged my coffee,” Mara said.

“To make you miss the ridge meeting.”

“You knew the brakes were cut.”

“After you left.”

“You crushed my hand.”

Claire’s expression tightened.

“You had already activated the system.”

“I asked my husband for help.”

“You were going to seal us in.”

“I did not know you existed until I saw you wearing my robe.”

For a moment, Claire appeared ashamed.

Then the lower chamber alarm sounded.

Oxygen pressure was failing.

Theodore entered his code.

Rejected.

Claire used the Vane pendant.

The chamber opened remotely.

A camera showed a narrow medical cell beneath the cabin. A man lay inside connected to breathing equipment.

White hair.

Untrimmed beard.

A scar across his forehead.

Russell Vane.

Alive.

Claire lowered the rifle slightly.

“Dad.”

Theodore stared.

“I saw him die.”

“Like Mara saw you die?” Claire asked.

The comparison silenced him.

A recorded message began playing inside the chamber.

Russell’s younger voice filled the archive.

“If Theodore opens this room, Northstar has failed. If Claire opens it, the succession has begun.”

Claire’s face changed.

She had not expected that sentence.

Russell continued.

“My daughter will be raised outside Blackridge. She will enter the Ellison system only after Theodore’s heir assumes control.”

Mara understood.

Claire had not discovered a mission as an adult.

Her path had been designed by Russell before his disappearance.

He expected her to infiltrate Mara’s life.

Theodore whispered, “He used his own child.”

Claire looked toward the screen.

“You used yours too.”

Both founders had built their daughters into systems while calling it legacy.

The chamber release required a physical medical override inside Cabin Seven. Someone had to reach the panel behind the fireplace.

Claire turned toward the corridor.

Mara blocked her.

“You’re carrying a rifle.”

“My father is dying.”

“You tried to leave me outside.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“I will surrender after I open the chamber.”

“Put down the rifle.”

“No.”

Theodore spoke quietly.

“Mara, let her go.”

Mara looked at him.

“You still think you decide.”

He lowered his eyes.

Claire faced a choice no one could make for her.

She placed the rifle on the floor.

Mara kicked it toward the evidence shelves.

Claire surrendered the Vane pendant.

Then Mara opened the corridor to Cabin Seven.

The route led through a narrow stairway emerging behind the fireplace.

Claire climbed first under camera surveillance.

Mara remained below with Theodore because her leg could not manage the stairs.

Dana coordinated the cabin system.

For several minutes, the enemies worked together.

Claire reached the medical override.

Theodore entered the archive sequence.

Mara authorized emergency release.

Dana stabilized the ventilation.

The chamber opened.

Russell’s heartbeat remained steady.

Then Evan appeared on the cabin camera.

He had forced the tunnel partition’s ventilation gap wide enough to crawl through. Blood marked his shoulder where metal cut him, but he remained mobile.

Claire turned.

Evan struck her from behind and seized the Vane pendant from the console.

“You were going to leave me trapped.”

“You tried to kill Mara.”

“So did you.”

He activated the lower chamber transfer.

Instead of releasing Russell toward the archive, the system moved the medical bed into Cabin Seven.

The fireplace opened.

Russell Vane emerged.

Evan pressed the hunting rifle against the unconscious man’s chest.

“Now someone gets me off this mountain.”

Mara spoke through the cabin intercom.

“There is no helicopter.”

“Then open the southern road.”

“The avalanche buried it.”

“Open another.”

“There isn’t one.”

Evan looked toward Claire.

For the first time, both understood the truth.

Mara had not merely canceled their preferred escape.

The mountain had removed every exit.

Then Russell opened his eyes.

He looked at Evan, then Claire.

His first words were not his daughter’s name.

“Where is the Northstar ledger?”

Claire’s hope collapsed.
