Chapter 12 - The Choice Northstar DemandedNorthstar presented two options.

Mara could accept permanent control immediately.

Doing so would open every restricted route, account, safe house, and identity archive in the network.

It would also lock Claire out forever.

Or Mara could reject sole succession and force a joint tribunal after rescue.

The tribunal would expose Northstar to federal review but risk releasing thousands of protected identities.

Russell urged her to accept.

“The network saves people governments abandon.”

Dana warned her not to.

“The same routes move stolen passports and unregistered weapons.”

Theodore admitted both were true.

Northstar had rescued disaster witnesses, relocated endangered families, and delivered supplies around corrupt officials.

It had also become a private empire answerable only to founders and successors.

Power capable of saving people had learned to justify every secret.

Evan stood beside the burning curtain while sprinklers soaked the cabin.

“Accept it, Mara. We can still fix this.”

“We?”

“You need someone who understands the financial system.”

“You emptied a rescue fund.”

“A monitored fund, apparently.”

“You believed it was real.”

He had no answer.

Claire held the silver key.

“If you accept, you become Theodore.”

“If you challenge me, you become Russell.”

Claire’s face tightened.

She had spent her life trying to reach her father only to discover his position waiting for her.

Mara refused the binary.

She selected TRIBUNAL.

The system requested confirmation from the challenger.

Claire stared at the screen.

Accepting would preserve her chance to control Northstar.

Rejecting would transfer the network into temporary independent custody.

Russell shouted, “Do not surrender your birthright.”

Claire looked at him.

“You raised me for a position, not a life.”

“I kept you alive.”

“You kept a role alive.”

Claire pressed REJECT CHALLENGE.

Northstar froze every private account and transmitted operational custody to a federal disaster-oversight panel.

Russell’s face filled with fury.

Theodore closed his eyes.

Their daughters had dismantled the succession both founders spent decades building.

Evan moved toward the fireplace console.

“If neither of you controls it, the accounts remain vulnerable.”

He attempted to enter his stolen credentials.

The system rejected him.

BENEFICIARY DISQUALIFIED: ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE.

The trust clause Theodore embedded extended beyond Blackridge property.

Evan’s violence stripped him of every Northstar access right.

Claire’s assault on Mara had also triggered review, but her later cooperation preserved only witness status—not inheritance authority.

Consequences separated from forgiveness.

Mara did not erase what Claire did because they rejected the same system.

The cabin fire suppression finally extinguished the curtain.

Smoke hung beneath the ceiling.

Dana reported rescue engineers had opened the southern Lantern shaft.

Agents and medics were descending.

Evan heard the announcement.

He looked toward the front door.

The snowpack outside had stabilized enough for a person on foot, though not an aircraft.

He seized Russell’s medical bed and pushed it toward the porch.

“You open the mountain, or I take him outside.”

Claire grabbed the bedrail.

“He’ll die.”

“Then Northstar loses another founder.”

Russell looked at his daughter.

For the first time, fear replaced command.

Evan unlocked the cabin door.

Wind and snow burst inside.

Mara tried to close it remotely.

The fire-evacuation override blocked her.

Evan dragged Russell onto the porch.

Claire followed without a coat.

The mountain emergency lights flashed red across the snow.

Mara activated the exterior speaker.

“Evan, there is no route down.”

“You opened one for the rescue team.”

“Through Lantern. You cannot reach it from the cabin.”

He looked toward the equipment shed.

The tunnel.

If he could enter and reach Lantern before agents arrived, he might take Mara hostage.

Claire understood at the same moment.

She stepped between Evan and the shed.

He struck her to the snow.

Then he abandoned Russell’s bed and ran toward the tunnel entrance.

Mara watched him disappear inside.

The southern rescue shaft opened behind Lantern.

Federal voices echoed below.

But Evan was closer.

The tunnel camera showed him moving toward Mara with the flare gun in one hand and the ice axe in the other.

👉 Mara and Claire rejected Northstar’s forced rivalry, but Evan entered the tunnel for one final attempt to seize Mara before rescuers could reach her.
