Chapter 17 - THE FATHER INSIDE SIMON REED’S FILEMara underwent seven hours of surgery.

Her left leg had fractured in three places. Ligaments around the knee were torn. Two fingers required pins after Claire’s boot crushed them against the porch. Hypothermia damaged nerves in Mara’s right hand, and bruising around her throat made swallowing difficult.
The surgeons saved the leg.
They did not promise she would walk without pain.
When Mara woke, Theodore’s name remained beside Father on the hospital contact screen.
Simon Reed appeared nowhere.
Mara asked a nurse to remove all family medical authority until current consent forms could be completed.
Theodore had raised her.
Simon had fathered her.
Elise had given birth to her.
None of those facts granted automatic access while she lay injured.
Dana brought Simon’s recovered crash recording after Mara’s attorney approved.
The call between Simon and Elise began calmly.
“You found Sloane?” Elise asked.
“He is using Northstar repair contracts to move identities through Colorado.”
“Do not approach him alone.”
“You have been saying that for seventeen years.”
“Because he knows who Mara is.”
“He knows Theodore raised her.”
“He knows you fathered her.”
Simon became silent.
Elise continued:
“If you expose yourself, Northstar will classify her as a Reed successor.”
“She is already trapped inside Theodore’s line.”
“She is alive.”
“That is not the same as free.”
The call ended when Simon said he had reached the canyon bridge.
Three minutes later, a maintenance truck forced his vehicle through the guardrail.
Elise had warned him.
She had not alerted Mara, Theodore, Dana or law enforcement.
“I believed the emergency channels were compromised,” Elise said during a court-supervised interview.
“Every channel?” Mara asked from her hospital bed.
“Enough of them.”
“You controlled Site Zero.”
“If I sent a rescue team, Sloane would know I survived.”
“So Simon’s death protected your identity.”
Elise looked away.
“Yes.”
Victor Sloane had been Northstar’s primary transportation contractor since the first avalanche. His companies repaired rescue roads, supplied helicopters and maintained confidential shelters.
He also moved stolen money and substituted identities through disaster zones where records were already chaotic.
Simon spent years documenting him.
Theodore collected separate evidence.
Russell used Sloane whenever Northstar’s official network became inconvenient.
Elise attempted to control him through hidden financial accounts.
All four adults knew Sloane remained dangerous.
None warned Mara that her foundation contracts included his companies.
Mara’s marriage had made Evan useful to the network because Evan approved procurement and donor transfers without understanding the full system. Claire entered as Mara’s assistant to trace Sloane.
Instead, Claire and Evan discovered each other’s resentment and built their own conspiracy.
Simon’s file included eleven letters addressed to Mara.
None had been sent.
The first was written when she turned sixteen.
The last was dated two days before his death.
Mara opened only the final one.
I kept waiting for a moment when truth would not destroy the father you already loved. That moment did not exist. I used its absence as permission to remain silent.
He explained that Theodore knew Mara’s biology before marrying Elise. Theodore loved her and chose to raise her after Simon entered covert disaster work.
Theodore was not a stranger who stole fatherhood.
Simon was not merely a victim denied it.
Both men accepted the arrangement.
Mara had been the only person excluded.
Dana asked whether Mara wanted the other letters.
“Not yet.”
“Do you want me here?”
“Not as an investigator.”
Dana removed her badge from the bedside table.
“As Simon’s sister?”
“I do not know you that way yet.”
“I understand.”
Mara almost said Dana could stay anyway.
Instead, she let the silence remain honest.
Theodore requested a video call.
Mara allowed five minutes.
“Did you love me as your daughter?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you know Simon remained alive?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he wanted to tell me?”
“Yes.”
“Why stop him?”
“I believed the truth would connect you to Northstar’s Reed routes.”
“You had already connected me to your entire mountain.”
Theodore’s eyes filled.
“I thought my name offered more protection.”
“It offered control you understood.”
“Yes.”
He asked whether she planned to change her surname.
“No.”
Relief crossed his face.
Mara saw it and added:
“Keeping Ellison is my decision. It is not forgiveness.”
Theodore lowered his head.
Outside her room, Northstar’s newly opened sites continued sending calls. Some residents asked for rescue. Others begged authorities not to reveal their locations.
One site transmitted a roster from the first avalanche.
The eleven dead climbers had been compensated through secret trusts.
Three trusts went to genuine families.
Eight had been redirected into Northstar companies.
One of those companies had financed Evan’s education, first apartment and introduction to Mara.
His marriage had begun before he knew Northstar existed.

The adults around him had prepared the path anyway.
👉 Evan may have chosen greed himself, but Northstar had placed him beside Mara years before either spouse understood why.
