Chapter 6 - Lantern ShelterMara reached Lantern Shelter with twelve minutes remaining.

The tunnel opened into a circular concrete room beneath the mountain. Theodore had preserved it almost exactly as he built it after the first Blackridge disaster.

Six bunks.

Emergency food.

Medical cabinets.

A diesel generator.

A wall of analog controls separate from the newer digital system.

And photographs of the eleven climbers whose deaths inspired the safety zone.

Mara locked the tunnel door.

Evan struck it from the other side.

“Mara!”

She crawled toward the control wall.

The old equipment responded slowly, but it could override newer commands if the digital network became compromised.

Theodore had believed every safety system needed a manual human decision at its center.

Mara switched the eastern blast gate to LOCAL CONTROL.

Claire’s pending command froze.

Evan’s approval token became useless.

He fired into the tunnel door.

The reinforced steel absorbed the shot.

“Mara, open this!”

She pressed the intercom.

“You left me to die.”

“I panicked.”

“You filed my death before I fell.”

“That was Claire.”

Claire’s voice came through his phone speaker.

“Don’t you dare.”

Their private call was routed through the tunnel system.

Mara listened.

Evan shouted, “You forged the medical statement!”

“You cut the snowmobile brakes!”

Mara closed her eyes.

The confession had arrived through their instinct to blame each other.

The local recorder captured every word.

Evan lowered his voice.

“If she dies, we can still fix this.”

Mara opened the intercom again.

“You’re both being recorded.”

Silence.

Then Evan struck the door harder.

The Lantern medical cabinet contained an emergency trauma brace. Mara secured her shattered leg and injected a low-dose painkiller from a sealed auto-injector.

Her thoughts became clearer.

She restored partial contact with Dana through the shelter’s buried cable.

“Mara?”

“I’m in Lantern.”

Dana exhaled.

“Rescue teams are at the southern barrier.”

“Do not open the mountain.”

“The ridge?”

“Major slab separation. Eleven minutes.”

Dana confirmed the danger.

Cabin Seven’s structure could survive the avalanche only with the eastern barrier closed and internal storm shutters engaged.

Claire had not activated the shutters.

She was too busy packing money and passports.

Mara could protect the cabin remotely.

Part of her wanted to let the mountain take everything.

The warm room.

The red robe.

The champagne.

Evan and Claire’s certainty.

Then she saw Theodore’s photographs on the wall.

The safety system existed to prevent death, not distribute it according to deserving.

Mara activated Cabin Seven’s storm shutters.

Metal panels descended over the windows.

Claire screamed as the city of snow disappeared behind steel.

Mara sealed the chimney dampers and switched the ventilation to emergency mode.

She protected the two people who had tried to murder her.

Not for them.

For herself.

Evan heard the systems activate.

“You need me alive for the confession.”

“I need the evidence intact.”

“You always cared more about control than people.”

Mara looked at the tunnel door.

“You crushed my throat and left me in the snow.”

“That was not me.”

“You watched Claire crush my hand.”

“I was trying to stop her.”

“You locked the door.”

Evan became quiet.

He could not transfer his choice into another person.

Dana interrupted.

“Federal agents verified the disaster-reserve theft. They’re preparing warrants.”

“Evan and Claire may have killed Simon Reed.”

“We found his closed complaint. State investigators are reopening the crash.”

Mara looked at the avalanche countdown.

Eight minutes.

“Can you shut down their Vancouver accounts?”

“Already frozen.”

Inside the cabin, Claire discovered the financial alert.

Her scream came through the audio feed.

“The money is gone!”

Evan backed away from the Lantern door.

“What?”

“All of it. The reserve transfer, the holding company, everything.”

Mara activated the cabin speaker.

“The trust amendment triggered a fraud review when you used a dead doctor’s license.”

Claire hurled the champagne bottle at the fireplace.

Glass shattered across the stone.

“You think this makes you powerful?”

“No,” Mara said. “It makes you documented.”

Claire opened the leather folder.

A second document lay inside.

She read it and turned toward the tunnel entrance.

“Evan, she changed the marriage trust.”

“What are you talking about?”

“If Mara dies through violence connected to a beneficiary, everything goes to the mountain workers’ fund.”

Evan stared toward the floor.

“You told me it went to us.”

Claire’s fear became calculation.

“And you told me the fall would look accidental.”

The alliance collapsed completely.

Evan began crawling back toward the cabin.

Claire moved toward the fireplace gun safe.

Mara saw both through separate cameras.

Five minutes remained.

Dana’s voice sharpened.

“Mara, Evan is returning to the cabin armed. Claire has another rifle.”

“Can rescue enter?”

“Not before the slide.”

Mara activated the interior emergency partitions.

Steel doors began dividing the cabin into protected compartments.

Evan reached the tunnel entrance just as the fireplace partition closed.

Claire stood on the other side holding the rifle.

She aimed directly through the narrowing gap.
