Chapter 9 - Northstar ReliefTheodore spoke first.

“Dana Holt was a financial investigator assigned to Blackridge after the first avalanche.”

Dana answered through the speaker.

“I was twelve when that avalanche happened.”

Mara looked at her father.

His statement was impossible unless Dana’s identity had been replaced.

Theodore opened an old personnel file.

The original Dana Holt had been a forty-one-year-old federal auditor who disappeared twenty-six years earlier. The current dispatcher used her name, credentials, and protected employment history.

“Who are you?” Mara asked.

Dana remained silent for several seconds.

“My birth name is Dana Reed.”

Simon Reed’s sister.

The safety engineer who died in the guardrail crash.

Dana entered the Blackridge system under an inherited federal identity to investigate her brother’s death and Theodore’s hidden archive.

The government program assigned dormant names to protected investigators.

Theodore had discovered the substitution and assumed Dana belonged to Northstar.

“You cloned my access,” Mara said.

“No. Claire cloned it after obtaining my training recordings.”

“You knew Simon had filed a complaint.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you warn me?”

“I did not know whether you were involved.”

The same excuse appeared everywhere.

Suspicion became permission to leave Mara uninformed.

Theodore activated another file.

Dana had accessed Mara’s medical profile, marriage trust, and satellite location repeatedly over six months.

Dana admitted it.

She believed Evan used Blackridge aircraft to move stolen identities through restricted airspace. Mara’s authorization appeared on several flights.

Those signatures were forged.

Dana did not know.

“You treated me as a suspect,” Mara said.

“Yes.”

“And tonight?”

“When your distress call arrived, I understood you were a target.”

Theodore laughed bitterly.

“She understood because the plan went wrong.”

Dana denied any role in the attempted murder.

Her secure identity had been copied by Claire, but Dana preserved system logs that now proved the forgery.

Mara looked between the medical room and the speaker.

“Who founded Northstar?”

Theodore answered, “A federal disaster coordinator named Russell Vane.”

Dana answered, “Theodore Ellison and Russell Vane together.”

The lower archive contained a signed charter.

Theodore’s signature appeared beneath Northstar’s original mission: covertly move emergency resources around corrupt officials during national disasters.

Theodore did not deny signing it.

“Northstar began as protection,” he said.

“And became money laundering,” Dana replied.

“After Vane took control.”

“You kept using its routes.”

“To document them.”

Again, continued involvement disguised as investigation.

Mara felt exhausted by powerful people who remained inside harmful systems because they alone believed they could manage them.

Theodore revealed Simon Reed discovered Evan had reactivated an old Northstar air corridor. Before Simon could identify the passengers, his truck went through the guardrail.

Theodore suspected Evan.

Dana suspected Theodore.

The recovered complaint named a third person.

Claire Winslow.

Simon had discovered Claire’s real surname.

Vane.

She was Russell Vane’s daughter.

Claire had entered Mara’s foundation to reclaim Northstar from Theodore’s family and obtain the lower archive.

The affair with Evan may have begun as operational access.

Its emotions did not make the mission less real.

Mara restored the cabin camera.

Claire sat beside the fireplace with the rifle across her lap. She had opened the floor panel leading toward the lower archive’s second entrance.

She knew the hidden level existed.

Evan remained trapped in the service tunnel.

He shouted through the intercom.

“Claire, open the partition!”

She ignored him.

Instead, she removed a pendant from her neck and pressed it against the fireplace reader.

The lower archive recognized her.

VANE FAMILY ACCESS.

Theodore’s face changed.

Russell Vane had held founder-level authority.

Claire could enter the hidden level without Mara.

A corridor door opened behind the evidence shelves.

Theodore attempted to seal it.

His command failed.

Claire’s voice came through the archive speaker.

“You kept my father’s company beneath your mountain.”

Theodore stood from the medical chair despite his weakness.

“He turned relief into trafficking.”

“You turned him into a fugitive.”

“He killed people.”

“So did your secrets.”

Claire stepped into the lower corridor wearing Mara’s red robe again beneath her winter coat. Blood stained one boot where she had crushed Mara’s hand.

She carried the rifle.

Mara raised the flare pistol.

Claire smiled.

“You survived exactly as my father said you would.”

“Where is Russell Vane?”

Claire looked toward Theodore.

“Ask the man who buried him beneath Cabin Seven.”

The mountain rumbled again.

A lower archive map illuminated.

A sealed chamber rested directly beneath the cabin fireplace.

Its life-support monitor had just activated.
