Chapter 32 - THE SISTERS WHO SHARED A MOTHER“May I come in?” Claire asked.

The question did not repair the night she had slammed another door.

It changed the present.

Mara opened the cabin fully.

Claire entered without removing her coat until Mara pointed toward the hook. She seemed afraid that becoming comfortable would look presumptuous.

A court-approved mediator remained in the adjoining room.

Neither woman wanted Elise, Russell, Theodore, Evan or Northstar present through memory more than necessary.

Claire began with the porch.

“I knew you were injured. I pressed my boot onto your fingers because I wanted you to release the door and because hurting you felt like proof that I was no longer beneath you.”

Mara’s hand tightened around the cane.

“You laughed.”

“Yes.”

“You said I should freeze.”

“Yes.”

“Did you mean it?”

“At that moment, yes.”

The answer remained terrible and useful.

Claire did not replace it with childhood manipulation.

She continued.

“I drugged the coffee. I copied your records. I let Evan cut the brakes. I believed we could frighten you, declare you dead and take the network. Later, when I understood how far he intended to go, I still searched for your body because the money needed it.”

“You saved me in the tunnel.”

“Yes.”

“That does not balance the rest.”

“No.”

Mara asked why Claire pulled Evan away from the pressure door.

“I saw him use me the way my parents had. I also understood you could close the door and let both of us die, but you kept the air gap open.”

“You helped because I saved you?”

“Partly. Partly because I finally saw you as a person instead of the life I had been denied.”

They discussed Elise.

Claire had received a mother’s physical presence and a childhood organized around revenge.

Mara had received Theodore’s love and a false death that left an empty place in every family photograph.

Neither woman had received the better version cleanly.

Claire once envied Mara’s wealth.

Mara envied Claire’s memory of Elise brushing her hair.

“You had her,” Mara said.

“I had the woman she became while hiding from you.”

“That is still more than a grave.”

“Yes.”

Claire did not argue.

Their first meeting lasted ninety minutes.

Mara did not call Claire sister.

The second occurred six months later in Denver.

The third included Dana, whom Claire distrusted because she had investigated both women.

The fourth ended in an argument over whether Elise had loved them.

Mara said yes.

Claire said love without truth did not deserve the word.

Neither won.

Over several years, they developed a relationship with boundaries.

Claire could not work in disaster systems, foundations, trusts or identity programs. She trained as a bookkeeper for a small manufacturing company after disclosing her convictions.

She gave no motivational speeches.

Mara attended no public redemption event.

They exchanged birthday messages inconsistently.

Claire visited when invited.

Mara sometimes declined.

The connection survived refusal.

Elise requested one final joint visit during terminal illness.

Claire refused.

Mara considered going alone.

“You don’t have to represent me,” Claire said.

“I know.”

“Do you want to see her?”

“I want to ask one question.”

“What?”

“Whether the eleven climbers knew the route was closed.”

Claire looked toward the mountain map.

“That isn’t about being her daughter.”

“No.”

Mara visited Elise with an investigator present.

Elise answered the question.

The climbers had received no warning until the first charge sounded.

Northstar later altered their radios to make it appear they ignored evacuation orders.

The dead had been blamed for entering danger voluntarily.

Elise possessed the original radio archive for decades.

She had withheld it because releasing the recording would expose Simon’s voice and Mara’s paternity.

Mara stared at her.

“You protected my secret with eleven people’s reputations.”

“Yes.”

“Did their families deserve the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

“Because I am dying.”

“That is not courage.”

“No.”

Elise surrendered the archive.

The families received corrected records.

Mara left without calling her mother.

Elise died three weeks later.

👉 Mara and Claire began choosing sisterhood in small pieces, while the eleven climbers finally received the truth Northstar had buried beneath their names.
