Chapter 7 - The Shot Behind the FireplaceClaire fired.

The bullet struck the steel partition inches from Evan’s face.

He dropped into the tunnel and pulled the fireplace panel closed.

“You’re insane!”

“You were going to blame me!”

“You forged everything!”

“You planned her fall!”

Mara recorded each accusation from Lantern Shelter.

The avalanche timer showed four minutes.

Evan remained in the tunnel, trapped between the locked shelter door and the sealed fireplace.

Claire stood inside the cabin with the second rifle, shaking so violently she could barely hold it.

Dana warned Mara that the eastern ridge sensor had stopped transmitting.

The slide might arrive early.

“Can you close the tunnel blast doors?” Dana asked.

“One would trap Evan in the center.”

“Leaving it open risks pressure reaching Lantern.”

Mara stared at the control.

Evan struck the intercom.

“Mara, open your door.”

“No.”

“The tunnel may collapse.”

“I know.”

“You can’t leave me here.”

He sounded genuinely afraid.

Mara remembered his face above her on the ridge station. The coffee he handed her. The false concern as dizziness began. The kiss he gave her before she drove the sabotaged snowmobile.

“Did you cut the brakes?” she asked.

Evan looked toward the tunnel camera.

“Claire paid the mechanic.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“Yes.”

The answer came quietly.

“I cut the backup line.”

Mara’s chest tightened.

“You watched me ride toward the ridge.”

“I thought you would lose control lower down.”

“You chose the route.”

“Yes.”

“Did you expect me to die?”

He closed his eyes.

“I expected the mountain to decide.”

Mara almost laughed.

Every murderer wanted nature to carry responsibility.

“The mountain didn’t pour drugs into my coffee.”

“Claire did.”

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

Another clean answer.

Too late to save anything.

Claire activated the cabin intercom.

“He told me you had already changed your will to exclude him.”

Mara answered, “I changed it after he moved disaster funds without authorization.”

“He said you planned to accuse me.”

“I planned to fire you.”

Claire’s face twisted.

“For what?”

“For copying donor files into a private account.”

Claire had begun stealing months before the murder plan. Evan discovered it and offered protection if she helped him take control of Blackridge.

Their affair and conspiracy had grown from mutual leverage.

Neither had rescued the other from Mara.

They had recognized the same appetite.

The mountain shook.

Photographs fell from Lantern’s wall.

Dana shouted, “Slide moving!”

Mara closed the tunnel pressure door between Lantern and Evan.

The steel panel descended.

Evan crawled toward it.

“Mara!”

She stopped the door with twelve inches remaining.

Snow thundered above.

The sound was beyond anything human—an entire ridge breaking into motion.

Cabin Seven’s shutters locked.

Exterior barriers rose.

The building disappeared inside a white cloud.

Pressure rushed through the service tunnel.

Evan flattened himself against the concrete.

Mara held the door control with her working hand.

If she closed it fully, Lantern would remain secure.

Evan might suffocate if the tunnel exits collapsed.

If she left the gap, pressure and debris could enter the shelter.

Theodore’s old emergency instructions appeared beside the lever:

PRESERVE LIFE WHEN POSSIBLE. DO NOT MULTIPLY CASUALTIES.

Mara closed the door until only a three-inch ventilation gap remained.

Enough air.

Not enough space for Evan to pass.

The pressure wave struck.

Lantern’s lights failed.

Mara was thrown sideways.

For a time, there was only darkness and roaring.

Then the generator started.

Dana’s voice returned faintly.

“Mara, respond.”

“I’m here.”

“Cabin Seven?”

The external cameras were gone.

The structural sensors remained active.

The cabin had survived.

Claire was alive inside.

Evan’s tunnel monitor showed a heartbeat and movement.

He had survived too.

Mara felt neither relief nor disappointment.

Only exhaustion.

The avalanche had blocked every surface approach. Rescue teams could not reach Lantern or the cabin until engineers assessed the snowpack.

Evan looked toward the camera through the ventilation gap.

“You saved me.”

“I preserved evidence.”

His expression hardened.

“You need me.”

“For court.”

“You think the Ellison name survives this?”

Mara understood the threat.

Evan knew something beyond the affair and stolen reserve.

“The disaster fund wasn’t the first money moved through Blackridge,” he said. “Ask Dana what your father buried beneath Lantern.”

Mara turned toward the shelter floor.

A blueprint appeared on the analog panel.

Lantern Shelter had another level.

Theodore never told her.

A sealed elevator descended beneath the mountain.

Its status light had activated during the avalanche.
