The helicopter refused his biometric profile because the manifest required medical priority.
Theodore’s carrier rose through the dam shaft.
Sloane placed a pistol against the pilot’s neck.
The pilot was not Cole Brennan and did not rely upon a copied identity. Federal technicians confirmed her face, voice and live challenge through three separate systems.
Captain Ava Morales shut down the rotor.
“You cannot fly with a weapon against me.”
Sloane ordered Elise to send Russell next.
Elise refused.
Sloane fired into the hydraulic panel.
Theodore’s carrier stopped halfway between levels.
Water continued rising below.
Mara listened from the hospital command room, one leg suspended inside an external brace.
“Cancel the aircraft,” Dana said.
“If we cancel completely, the shaft stops.”
“Then Sloane escapes if it launches.”
Mara opened the corridor controls.
The same red cancellation option she had selected outside Cabin Seven appeared.
She pressed it.
FLIGHT AUTHORIZATION REVOKED.
GROUND MEDICAL TRANSFER REMAINS ACTIVE.
The helicopter rotor locked.
The shaft continued lifting Theodore because its medical power had been separated from aviation.
Sloane had built his plan around Northstar treating rescue and escape as one operation.
Mara divided them.
Federal teams entered the upper dam through spillway tunnels. Elise opened the underground medical doors after receiving assurance that every patient would obtain independent counsel.
Russell arrived second.
Sloane abandoned the helicopter and fled toward the turbine corridor. Claire guided agents through an old Vane map.
He reached a maintenance platform above freezing water and threatened to destroy the ledger remotely.
The command failed.
Mara had already fragmented its destinations.
One copy existed with a court.
Another with disaster-worker representatives.
Another with witness advocates.
Another with financial investigators.
No single device remained valuable enough to become a hostage.
Sloane surrendered after officers closed both ends of the platform.
Elise was arrested underground.
Theodore and Russell entered separate hospitals under guard.
The operational ledger entered evidence through a transparent chain involving multiple agencies. No founder retained a private copy officially, though forensic searches would continue.
Mara spoke to Elise once before transport.
“You chose to save them,” Elise said. “Even after everything.”
“I chose medical access.”
“You canceled Sloane’s escape because you understood the system I built.”
“I understood the system because every adult around me used it against someone.”
“You are still my daughter.”
“That is biology.”
Elise’s face tightened.
“You use that phrase as punishment.”
“No. I use it because you keep trying to make biology an office.”
Claire requested no private conversation with Elise.
She watched her mother’s arrest through the detention monitor and turned away.
Theodore survived surgery.
Russell survived stabilization.
Neither man received the ledger.
The national activation ended after local authorities assumed control of each live site.
The sirens across Blackridge stopped.
For the first time since the blizzard began, Mara heard silence.
Then financial investigators opened one of the eleven avalanche trusts.
A dead climber named Aaron Bell had supposedly funded Evan’s university education through a scholarship foundation.
Aaron had no surviving children.
His widow had never authorized the scholarship.
Evan’s father served as accountant for Victor Sloane and received money for steering his son toward the Ellison family.
Evan did not know Northstar’s name when he met Mara.
He knew his father expected him to marry wealth.
Years later, when Evan discovered the mountain accounts, he understood that his relationship had been encouraged.
He chose to exploit it rather than tell his wife.
Mara’s marriage had contained real affection.
It had also grown inside a corridor other men prepared.
